Are you waiting for a study visa but have a receipt? Here’s important information about pre-registration
24 Feb 2017 - 15:30
The “blanket extension” to study visas (Directive) issued by the Minister of Home Affairs on 31 October 2016 was meant to apply only to final year students from 2016 who would have had to wait to write their examinations in Jan or Feb of 2017.
However, because the Directive from the Minister was very broadly worded and referred to all international students, some students have used the period of the blanket extension to apply for extensions to their study visas. These applications were either made late, or the issue of these extensions has been delayed by processes at the Department of Home Affairs. The result is that some students have proof of application (receipts) but do not yet have a study visa which is valid beyond 31 March 2017.
IAPO and the International Education Association of South Africa (IEASA) have sought advice from the Department of Home Affairs. The Department has indicated that the decision to allow the registration of students without valid visas but with receipts is at the discretion of the universities.
After March 31st, which is when the Directive expires, students must all be in possession of and submit to their institutions, valid study visas. If they are not in possession of this, they must then deregister, as the Directive will no longer be valid, making their registration illegal.
1. Students may pre-register if you do not yet have a valid study visa beyond 31 March 2017 but do have a receipt of your application.
2. Your registration is only valid until the 31 March and to extend your registration beyond this date, you must bring your valid study visa to IAPO for the period beyond 31 March 2017 for a final pre-registration process.
3. The onus is on you, the student to ensure that you do.
4. Failure to do so will result in your being de-registered.
Please be aware that from 27 February to 10 March, all pre-registration processes will take place in the Sports Centre, alongside registration.
