Going overseas: preparing students for studying abroad
This semester, more than 50 students from across UCT will be on various exchange programmes with our partner universities, including short-term and semester abroad programmes in China, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.
IAPO hosted a pre-departure information event at the School of Economics that allowed students going on exchange to interact with returning students and to learn from them. The students returning from various exchanges – from partner university short-term to semester study abroad exchanges in California, New York, London and Toronto – shared their experiences and tips with the excited outgoing students.
The event, coordinated by Erin Pienaar, the programme officer: exchanges, gave students an opportunity to think about their goals for their exchange experience and how to maximise the opportunity.
Mastercard Scholars Careers Advisor Jean Alfred gave students insight into the potential career opportunities and perspective shifts that can be gained from visiting other countries and their universities.
The event was capped off by Mokgadi Marishane, a UCT undergraduate student in politics and governance, who had recently returned from a semester abroad at the University of Amsterdam. She shared her experience, highlights and advice on how to maximise the international academic experience.
