Student and staff exchange opportunities in Spain
Alianza 4 Universidades (A4U) has been successful in gaining funding to enable student and academic staff exchanges between six South African partner universities, including UCT, and universities of A4U.
A4U is a consortium of four Spanish public universities: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. The funding, from the Erasmus+ programme, amounts to EUR26 600.
Bachelor, master’s and PhD students as well as teaching and administrative staff from all subject areas at UCT, as well as the other South African partner universities, and A4U universities can apply. There are usually two calls a year and the next call will open during December 2018.
The Erasmus+ funding secured by A4U covers travel and living expenses for three to five months for students and for seven days for staff. The time spent abroad is recognised by the sending university, and the credits count towards the student’s academic record. Staff deliver eight hours of teaching or receive training during their stay.
There have already been 49 successful exchanges of staff and students between A4U and its South African partner universities since the beginning of the programme in 2015, and 15 more are expected to take place during the next two years.
The benefits of such an exchange programme for students include improved language and inter-cultural skills, increased confidence and international experience, which counts towards their qualification.
Staff will get to know first-hand the workings of a different education system, learn and share new ideas and explore best practices. They will also be able to benefit from research and teaching development opportunities, and training.
Apply here. Calls will open again in December 2018.
The facilitator of the programme in South Africa is Dr Álvaro de la Cruz-Dombriz, a lecturer in the UCT Department of Mathematics. IAPO assists with the application process.
